Vindex, originally named Viking, was originally built as passenger ferries for the Isle of Man Steam Packet society. Manxman was also a ferry for the Midland Railway for the Heysham - Douglas service. Both were taken over by the Royal Navy in 1915 (Vindex) and 1916 (Manxman) to be converted as seaplane tenders. They are able to carry eight seaplanes.
