  • Toby Benton was an American veteran of World War II. An expert in ordinance, Benton frequently assisted Lou Weissberg's efforts to to dismantle explosive traps set by the German Freedom Front. He was from Oklahoma. Benton accompanied Weissberg to Erlangen to investigate the first known suicide bombing by a Werewolf agent in July 1945, and was present when Weissberg interviewed Anton Herpolsheimer. Later, in the fall of 1945, Benton helped Weissberg locate a GFF bunker in the forests of Bavaria. Benton was able to difuse several booby-traps around the bunker, thus allowing the US to seize and destroy various weapons and propaganda flyers. Benton continued to serve as Weissberg's explosives expert into 1946. He accompanied Weissberg to Cologne when Weissberg met with Konrad Adenauer. However, Benton was more than ready to go home. For his own part, Weissberg felt that Benton deserved to go home, but knew that Benton was too good at his job to be discharged any time soon, a paradox which Weissberg described as a "heller." Benton finally went home in 1947.
