In 2373, she was assigned along with it to the USS Valiant as part of a training exercise. However, this was just prior to the outbreak of the Dominion War, and the ship was caught behind enemy lines. In an ensuing battle, the officers on the ship were killed, and Collins received a field commission to acting chief petty officer by fellow Red Squad cadet Tim Watters, who had been given command of the Valiant. She spent eight months while Watters continued the officer's mission. When the ship encountered Jake Sisko and Ensign Nog under attack in the USS Shenandoah, she transported both of them to the Valiant. The two would then accompany the ship on its mission. Collins showed them around, and, in talking with Jake, related how she missed home. Watters took this as a distraction and attempted to order Jake away from Collins. After Watters ordered an attack of the Jem'Hadar battleship that failed, the bridge crew eventually were all killed except her. Nog convinced her to abandon ship with himself and Jake, and they were retrieved by the USS Defiant. She was the only Red Squad member to survive the destruction of the Valiant. In the end, she still believed Watters was a good man, though Nog said, despite that, he was a bad captain. (DS9: "Valiant") Collins was played by Ashley Brianne McDonogh. It is unclear why she was granted an enlisted rank when, as a cadet of Starfleet Academy, she should have been granted a provisional officer's rank. According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 153) , she was named for Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins.

In 2374, when Jake Sisko and Nog were rescued by the Valiant, Collins became upset when she and Jake discussed Luna. During the Valiant's attack on the Jem'Hadar battleship, Collins took the place of a Cadet who had been killed. She later took Riley Shepard's place at the conn after he was killed, but she was unable to restore helm control. With the Valiant almost destroyed, Collins, Nog and Jake left the ship in an escape pod. Collins and the others were rescued by the USS Defiant, where she was treated by Julian Bashir. Collins defended Watters' actions, although Nog told he may have been a hero and a great man but he was a bad captain. (DS9 episode: "Valiant") Following the destruction of the Valiant, Collins returned to Tycho, where she received counseling from Deanna Troi and a visit from Nilz Baris. In 2375, she was assigned to the USS Wyandotte as part of a cadet assignment. Collins kept a diary of her life in which she documented her experiences during her recovery.
