José López Portillo y Pacheco (June 16, 1920 - February 17, 2004) was the Prime Minister of Mexico from 1975 until 1982, when he resigned in favor of Miguel de la Madrid after economic struggles, popular opposition to American military bases in the south and domestic outrage over his behavior following the Agua Prieta incident. Portillo was the successor to longtime Prime Minister Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, succeeding him at the 1975 Party of the Revolution party conference in Mazatlan.
