The 1985 Aeroflot Antonov An-12 shoot down occurred on November 25, 1985, when an Aeroflot Antonov An-12BP cargo airplane being operated by the Soviet Air Force en route from Cuito Cuanavale to Luanda was shot down by South African Special Forces and crashed approximately 43 km (27 mi) east of Menongue, the provincial center of the Cuando Cubango province, Angola. The incident took place in the aftermath of FAPLA’s operation “2 Congresso do Partido” conducted against UNITA military formations in the 6th Military Region. The transport was carrying eight crew members, 13 passengers and two tank diesel engines in need of repairs.
