  • Kansas is a U.S. State located in the Midwestern United States. It is featured in L. Frank Baum's The Land of Oz. The main character of the story, Dorothy, lives there before she is transported into the magical world of Oz by a cyclone. In Beyond the Kingdoms, Alex, Conner, Mother Goose, Lester, Goldilocks, Jack and Red travel into the story and the Land of Oz in persuit of the Masked Man. When they go inside the book through the portal potion, they arrive in fictional Kansas. It is described as colorless and depressing. Red remarks: "It reminds me of my kingdom- if all the happiness and color had been drained from it." They meet the characters from the book; Dorothy, auntie Em and uncle Henry, and are invited into their farmhouse. The house is very small and has only one room. The farmhouse also has a storm cellar. They serve only corn. It is implied that they never get any visitors and live a very dull life (and eat dull food). Dorothy is practically starved for stories. True to the book, a cyclone arrives. The twins and their friends are separated from Dorothy, who has gone back into the house to retrieve Toto while they seek shelter in the barn. At the last moment, they see the Masked Man sprint to the house to "catch a ride". The cyclone lifts the entire house and the barn up in the air and deposits them in different locations of Oz; the friends land on top of the Tin Woodman, Dorothy and the Masked Man presumably end up in Munchkinland.
