It begins after the shade Durza has been killed by the Rider Eragon with the help of Arya, the elf, and Saphira, the dragon. Over the course of the book Nasuada, the daughter of the leader of the Varden, must take up leadership while Eragon goes to Du Weldenvarden to train with the elves. Murtagh is taken captive and seemingly killed and Saphira attacks her master while training. Eragon himself becomes part elf through the help of some dragons and is healed before the Varden fight a huge battle with the Urgal and Murtagh. Murtagh, who was taken to Galabatorix rather than killed, has been turned and is discovered to be Eragon's brother, making Eragon also Morzan's son.
- The Eldest was an aboleth of massive size, incalculable age and inconceivable malignancy. It ruled the city of Xxiphu and the Abolethic Sovereignty. It was the most powerful and oldest aboleth in the city of Xxiphu and was believed to be the only "living" being that could use the Key of Stars to unlock the Far Manifold beyond Forever's Reach.
