  • Severus (10 August 60 AD- 13 July 89 AD ) was the fifth member of the Argead-Ptolemaic dynasty of Diadochia. He succeeded his uncle and step-father Ptolemy II in 75 AD, following the latter's death (who was believed to have been poisoned) and reigned until he took his own life rather then submit to being deposed. During his rule Severus focused much of attention to the cultural life of the empire, but to the people he was considered to be corrupt and wicked while originally they had loved him. His rule has largely been associated with oppression and extravagance. He ordered the executions of many people, including his own mother; his cousin Flavius would have died at his hand if he had not fled the capital weeks before his father's death.
