They were encountered by Alan, where he first witnessed two Lankers messily ripping a poor man apart. Alan killed several of them, but was wounded by one and only saved by a military commander. Lankers continued to run amok, killing anything that wasn't infected, but were wiped out when the military cleared Maine of B.O.W.s.
