It was written by James Lord Pierpont (1822–1893) and published under the title "One Horse Open Sleigh" in the autumn of 1857. Even though it is now associated with the Christmas and holiday season, it was actually originally written to be sung for American Thanksgiving. • "Jingle Bells" is Moon Man's take on the classic Christmas carol of the same name. Moon Man's version also parodies a brief snippet of "Joy to the World". It was produced by YTMND's Hypersaxon, one of Moon Man's earliest producers. It was eventually added to Moon Man's first Christmas album, A KKKhristmas KKKarol. Moon Man appears to be struggling with some tenets of Christianity during a rant in the song, even though he is typically firmly against the Christian church. At the same time, he uses Christian doctrine to further his antisemitic views.

Even though the song about winter does not make any references to Christmas, it has become one of the most popular holiday carols, and has been translated into many languages. In 1957, it inspired "Jingle Bell Rock." "Jingle Bells" has been performed by the Muppets on several occasions.

  • James Lord Pierpont originally composed his most famous song in 1850. A plaque commemorating the "birthplace" of "Jingle Bells" adorns the side of a building in Medford, MA. Pierpont wrote the song there, at the former Simpson Tavern, now 19 High Street in the center of Medford Square. According to the Medford Historical Society, the song was inspired by the town's popular sleigh races during the 1800s. Music historian James Fuld notes that "the word jingle in the title and opening phrase is apparently an imperative verb." However, it is commonly taken to mean a certain kind of bell.
