Hiding in the underbrush of Knothole, Shadow the Hedgehog watches over Hope Kintobor and mulls over her uncanny likeness to Maria Robotnik. Locke appears behind Shadow and asks him for assistance. Shadow chooses to ignore the old man and is tripped by a rope-string trap as he walks away. Furious, Shadow lunges at Locke, only to be caught in a blue energy field that teleports both of them out of the village. Hope, having seen their confrontation, wanders into the field as well.

| - Hiding in the underbrush of Knothole, Shadow the Hedgehog watches over Hope Kintobor and mulls over her uncanny likeness to Maria Robotnik. As Hope enters the dilapidated hideout, she sees Locke manage to trap Shadow in a holding chamber. The chamber triggers Shadows memories of isolation: his first awakening aboard the Space Colony ARK with Gerald Robotnik, the death of Maria (STH: 98), and the Bem ship that revived him (STH: 124). Shadow demands that Locke explain himself. Locke obliges, revealing that Shadow may be the key to finding his lost family. Before he can elaborate, Hope speaks up, demanding that Locke leave Shadow alone. Surprised to see that she followed them, Locke tries to warn her that she's in a dangerous place. Watching Locke speak forcefully to Hope stirs Shadow's memories further, causing him to have a flashback of Maria's death. Fearing Maria's safety, Shadow breaks out of the chamber and attacks Locke. They fight once more, Shadow gaining the upper hand, when Hope pleads for Shadow to stop. As she tries to explain how scared he's making her, Shadow remembers that Hope isn't Maria. Hope tries to comfort him, offering to be his friend, but Shadow refuses to accept her friendship and escapes. Locke muses that they'll always have another chance to win Shadow over and decides to take Hope back to Knothole.
