  • Ludwig Alfred Karl von Bengasi (April 1, 1850 - December 13, 1927) (Ital: Luigi Alfredo Carlos de Bengasi), known in both France and the Anglophone world as Louis of Bengasi, was the Duke of Bengasi from 1875 until the Cyrenese Revolution in 1907, in which he was forced into exile in the Papal States until his death in 1927 at the age of 77. Louis was despised by both his European-descended and Arab subjects, regarded as a detached, apathetic and decadent foreign occupier of the Maghreb, and his cruel crackdowns - in particular upon the poorer Arabs - brewed almost two decades of hostility that came to a head in the Cyrenese Revolution. Louis spent his final years with his title in pretendence and unrecognized by any foreign government in Rome.
