The Shalka are underground dwellers who need volcanic gases to live and can easily survive immersed in lava. They use sound waves to navigate (as their eyes are practically useless), as well as to stun and hypnotize their prey. They are described as "bioplasmic" creatures; therefore slaying or blasting their bodies doesn't kill them, and they are also capable of fusing their bodies together to form a new gestalt organism. Their bodies are generally worm-like, but can vary in size and form according to the individual's function within the hive: from the massive semi-humanoid Shalka Prime which leads them, to minuscule parasitic Shalka which can be implanted in humanoid hosts.

  • The Shalka were made almost entirely out of lava, possibly making them some kind of magma form, so they had no set form. They did appear once as large, worm-like creatures with cobra-like frills, but there were also Shalka of different sizes and shapes. They lived underground, near where lava met metamorphic rock, breathing in the volcanic air, though Shalka Prime, their leader, was able to speak English and breathe oxygen. They communicated by screaming and used sound as a weapon and a means of controlling "lower alien creatures", like humans, and to accomplish other tasks.

They communicated by screaming and used sound as a weapon and a means of controlling "lower alien creatures", like humans, and to accomplish other tasks. Sometimes, the Shalka merged themselves together to form a larger, lumbering and (seemingly) less intellegent body called the Shalka Conglomerate. Their technicians had extra arms and brains studded down their backs. With the exception of more experienced Shalka, like the Shalka Prime, Shalka could be blown up by singing at their frequency.
