The Truckee Carson Irrigation District operates, under contract from the United States Bureau of Reclamation, the Newlands Project in western Nevada. Water is drawn from Lake Tahoe and the Carson and Truckee Rivers and distributed through 370 miles of irrigation canals. The district was founded in 1918 to help mangage the Truckee Carson Project (now the Newlands Project) built under the Federal Reclamation Act. 73, 000 acres within the district are irrigated.
