By 2368 she was a third-year cadet at Starfleet Academy, where she was a member of Nova Squadron along with fellow Cadets Sito Jaxa, Nicholas Locarno, Wesley Crusher and Joshua Albert. Hajar served as team navigator. On stardate 45703.9, Nova Squadron attempted a banned Kolvoord Starburst at Titan. During the maneuver Cadet Albert's ship collided with Hajar's ship, resulting in an explosion that destroyed the other ships of the squadron. All of the Nova Squadron, with the exception of Cadet Albert, transported safely to the emergency evacuation station on Mimas. Hajar participated in the cover-up following this incident, reporting to the Academy board of inquiry that the squadron was in fact performing a Yeager Loop when the collision occurred. However, the conspiracy was uncovered by Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and Cadet Crusher admitted the truth to the board. Locarno took full responsibility for the incident, and was expelled, while Hajar and the other squadron members were given formal reprimands, and their academic credits for the previous year were canceled. (TNG episode: "The First Duty") Hajar's fate following this incident is as yet unknown.

Hajar and the other members of Nova Squadron attempted to cover up the fact it was their performing the banned Kolvoord Starburst which resulted in Albert's death by placing the blame for the accident solely on Albert. Wesley Crusher, however, ultimately confessed to their wrongdoing during the resulting board of inquiry. Team leader Nicholas Locarno took full responsibility for the actions of the Squadron, and was expelled from the Academy. Hajar, Crusher, and Sito Jaxa had their flight privileges revoked and their permanent service records tainted; they also had their academic credits for the past year revoked. (TNG: "The First Duty" ) Jean Hajar was played by Walker Brandt.
