abstract
| - The nation of Vichy France, also known as the French State, known by its temporary capital, is a French remnant state that existed following the capture of Paris to Germany and surrender of France during the Great European War. The state was born from the territory seized by the Free French Forces (Forces françaises libres), a group of individuals and former military units part of a resistance organization founded by Charles de Gaulle in 1940 in London to continue the struggle against the Axis powers. As the number of Free French Forces grew, the French resistance was able to seize portions of southern France, in full rebellion against the Nazi Regime. After months of skirmishes and fighting the French forces managed to establish a loose line of defense running through the city of Vichy, temporarily designated as its the organization's capital. Over the next few months the Free French Forces in the region would continue the struggle against the German military, managing to hold the Germans back and delay them long enough for a decently sized portion of the French population to free to French Algeria, and from there to other colonies. After months of intense struggle with the Germans the remaining French forces on the mainland had been cornered against the Mediterranean Sea. As many Free French Forces chose to evacuate, the line eventually fell apart and Free France collapsed.
