- Nen (念, Mind Force) is one of the defining features of the manga Hunter × Hunter by Yoshihiro Togashi. It is a technique that allows a living being to use and manipulate their own life energy (known as aura). The word "Nen" can also be used in conversation to refer to aura.
- Nen (念, "Thought") is a specialized energy that flows within the minds of every living being, and one that governs thought and emotion. This energy is often utilized in Nenjutsu (念術, Lit. Thought Techniques) otherwise known as Nen Tech. Nen is not naturally unlocked by any being, as to use it is to upset the balance of one's mind and begin the slow descent into insanity. As such the energy has been locked off as an evolutionary safety mechanism, and it can only be unlocked by one of three things: the hopeful practitioner practicing the Psionic Arts of the Tōitsu Clan, the hopeful practitioner channeling vast amounts of Yin Release chakra into their brain in order to spurn the unlocking of their Nen or a hopeful practitioner having the Yin Chakra of someone else channeled into their mind.

Nen is an energy concealed within the Nen Nodes of one's mind. These Nodes constantly regulate the Nen within one's mind in order to keep it from running rampant and devolving the person into a mindless beast, or an insane psychopath. However, those who unlock their Nen via one of the aforementioned methods are capable of manipulating and expending their Nen without worry of any detrimental effects, due to being granted a fine control over everything in tune with one's mind. Each method of unlocking one's Nen has a risk factor to performing them, however. For those who wield the Psionic Arts of the Tōitsu Clan, unlocking their Nen will mean they are completely unable to delve into the other hiden branches of the clan. If they have already ventured into those branches, they are locked off from learning anymore. For those who flood their brain with their own Yin Chakra, they run the risk of flooding their mind too much and unleashing all of their Nen at once rather than just unlocking their Nodes. This results in blood vessels bursting within their brain, causing substantial nose bleeds and possibly rendering the person brain dead. For the final method, they run the risk of their body rejecting the Yin Chakra and activating a defense mechanism that completely shuts down the brain, sending them into a comatose state that is unable to be awoken from. A fourth method exists, but it is known only to a select few. Cthulhu, the god of Intellect, is able to extend his influence to a person in order to unlock their Nen Nodes, but this is a rare thing and not often done. Those of the Tōitsu clan have a disposition towards learning techniques that require the usage of Nen, the art coming much easier to them than it does to others. Nen is powerful in it's own right, being a tad more powerful than chakra, with Nenjutsu being able to easily overcome chakra based techniques.
