He briefly retired in 1925 but returned for the 1926-27, trying out for the NHL's Pittsburgh Pirates, and ultimately playing for the St. Paul Saints of the AHA.

He was also invited to play for the American National Team at the 1924 Winter Olympics. Bonney declined the offer.
