The system works as a whole to perform two functions in the human body: to obtain oxygen and to excrete waste gases. Oxygen is necessary for all the body's cells to be able to do their job. Carbon dioxide is the primary waste gas that humans exhale (breath out), and it is created as a by-product of respiration. PS- 'respiration' and 'breathing' are two different things. Respiration happens in all cells (they respire), not just the lungs. Hope that helps. Codeye
