| - Blood essences are pocket slot items with combat benefits unlocked after River of Blood, made using potions and congealed blood. The ability to make them is unlocked by reading Haemalchemy (Vol. 2), obtained by speaking to Vanescula Drakan on top of Castle Drakan after completion of the quest. Vanescula will then give one of them for free. Blood essences are created with 1,000 charges (including the free one from Vanescula). Additional charges can be added by using more congealed blood - 10 charges each - to a maximum of 5,000 charges. Once the charges are completely exhausted, the benefits of the essence cannot activate, but it can still be worn. Upon death, if recovered from a gravestone and not protected, essences lose 1,000 charges. Destroying an essence also destroys all of its remaining charges. Blood essences have two functions when worn in combat: a passive effect, which occurs randomly in combat with a weak benefit, and a much stronger version of the effect which can be activated at any time from a right-click option when worn. Activated effects have a one minute cooldown period where it cannot be activated again; this is shared over all essences - except the tireless blood essence, which has a two minute cooldown shared with adrenaline/replenishment potions instead. Each time the passive effect occurs, 1 charge is drained; each use of the active effect drains 50 charges. Each passive occurrence costs , and each activation costs .
