Waimea Bay was the initial landing site of the Japanese invasion of Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The U.S. Army, consisting the Nineteenth Infantry Regiment and the Thirteenth Field Artillery Battalion, defended Waimea Bay despite the losses that were inflicted by Japanese aircraft while coming to Waimea Bay. Surfers Oscar van der Kirk and Charlie Kaapu were surfing at Waimea Bay during the time of the invasion and luckily escaped from the firefight before the Japanese had landed on the beach.
