He continued serving under the Imperial Remnant after the fragmentation of the Empire in the aftermath of Endor, but later retired after the Yuuzhan Vong War, in 29 ABY. He was a seasoned soldier and maintained a low rank in order to keep fighting on the front lines. By 3 ABY, Markand was one of the most seasoned troops in Blizzard Force. He led a platoon of snowtroopers called Tundra Team, which spearheaded the attack on the Hoth Rebel base, alongside the 501st Legion. After the success at Hoth, Markand briefly served as an arctic combat instructor at the Carida Imperial Military Academy before being sent to an Outer Rim planet to command the garrison there.

After the deaths of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader at the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, Markand continued to stay loyal to whoever controlled Imperial City, though it did not matter too much as no warlord tried to take over the planet. Eventually, Tundra Team was withdrawn to the Deep Core to take part in Operation Shadow Hand, but was sent back to the Outer Rim shortly before the campaign ended.
