Petersburg is a city in western Monroe County, Michigan. Originally founded as Summerfield, it is located in the northern potion of Summerfield Township. The community is located about five miles south-southwest of Dundee and seventeen miles west of Monroe. The population was 1,157 during the 2000 census. Petersburg directs Max Payne to Mona Sax's cell when the detective comes to get a statement from the murder suspect. However, a few moments later, the Cleaners assault the station with the intent to find and kill Mona and fatally wound the officer. Briefly calling for help, Petersburg succumbs to his wounds before anyone can reach him. Payne is shocked when he finds his corpse. In the PC version, Petersburg is white. In the PS2 and Xbox versions, he is black instead.
- When John Houston Thorpe arrived in the afterlife, he found himself in a reenactment of the Siege of Petersburg. Specifically, the Second Battle of Reams Station in late August 1864, where his side defeated the Yankees.
