Born in Montreal, Quebec on January 6, 1976, Goneau joined the major junior Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Laval Titan and Granby Bisons. He won the AutoPro Plaque (top plus/minus player) in 1995-96. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins 47th overall in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. Unable to come to terms with the club, the young forward re-entered the draft and was taken 48th overall by New York in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft after scoring 54 goals for Granby and being named to the QMJHL first all-star team in 1996.

Unable to come to terms with the club, the young forward re-entered the draft and was taken 48th overall by New York in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft after scoring 54 goals for Granby and being named to the QMJHL first all-star team in 1996. The gifted youngster scored 10 goals in 41 games as a rookie in 1996-97 but was unable to build on this early success. Goneau became a fixture on the AHL's Binghamton Rangers and Hartford Wolf Pack, helping the latter club win the Calder Cup in 2000. He spent the 2000-01 season in the IHL with the Manitoba Moose and Detroit Vipers. Goneau spent several more years in the minors and retired in 2008. His NHL totals were 12 goals and 3 assists in 52 games played.
