In thePrologue, Raphael's appearance is essentially the same as it is in Mirage Volume 1, from which MNT Gaiden branches its continuity. But the events of that incident has produced the most obvious change in Raph's appearance—a body covered with many deep and massive scars, inflicted on him by his brother Leonardo wielding the Totsuka Sword. One of these wounds permanently blinded Raph's left eye, which he now covers with a black eye patch just underneath his bandana—this is a nod to the Image comics Volume 3, whose version of Raphael was blinded in the same eye and also started wearing a patch. In actuality, most of Raph's scars are routinely reopened when Raph gets depressed and cuts himself out of self-hatred, which may actually be giving the scars a fresher appearance than they might

| - In thePrologue, Raphael's appearance is essentially the same as it is in Mirage Volume 1, from which MNT Gaiden branches its continuity. In actuality, most of Raph's scars are routinely reopened when Raph gets depressed and cuts himself out of self-hatred, which may actually be giving the scars a fresher appearance than they might otherwise have had he let them simply heal—this is evidenced by Raph at 17 years old actually receiving a larger number of unique wounds than still appear on his skin at 34 years old. His adult scars are fairly consistently shown:
* One diagonal scar across his left eye, starting in the middle of his forehead and ending on his left cheek.
* One large diagonal scar across his plastron, starting on his right chest and ending on his lower left abdomen.
* One scar on each of his shoulders.
* One scar on his right upper arm.
* One horizontal scar on his left upper leg.
* Two horizontal scars, one above the other, on his right upper leg. Raph is also very noticeably taller, bulkier and more muscular than he was as a teenager, and as a running gag is also said to be fat. Raph's lower arms are now typically wrapped in white bandages, similarly to certain incarnations of Splinter. Raph is also now a chain-smoker, and is frequently seen with a lit cigarette in his mouth or fingers. Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.
