  • Yttrium has an atomic number of 39.
  • Yttrium (symbol Y) is a chemical element, a transition metal with atomic number 39 on the periodic table.
  • Yttrium was a type of mineral. The planet Guiteica held extensive underground reserves of yttrium; as a result, many different pro-Imperial mining companies attempted to convince the native Bitthævrians to permit and engage in mining operations on the planet. Vulca Minerals attempted to adopt a pushy attitude toward yttrium mining, which led to m'Yalfor'ac Order considering the execution of their leader. Eventually, Kadok Resources was assigned to manage all of Guiteica's exports.
  • In 1787, Carl Axel Arrhenius found a new mineral near Ytterby in Sweden and named it ytterbite, after the village. Johan Gadolin discovered yttrium's oxide in Arrhenius' sample in 1789, and Anders Gustaf Ekeberg named the new oxide yttria. Elemental yttrium was first isolated in 1828 by Friedrich Wöhler.

abstract
  • In 1787, Carl Axel Arrhenius found a new mineral near Ytterby in Sweden and named it ytterbite, after the village. Johan Gadolin discovered yttrium's oxide in Arrhenius' sample in 1789, and Anders Gustaf Ekeberg named the new oxide yttria. Elemental yttrium was first isolated in 1828 by Friedrich Wöhler. The most important use of yttrium is in making phosphors, such as the red ones used in cathode ray tube displays and in LEDs. Other uses include the production of electrodes, electrolytes, electronic filters, lasers and superconductors; various medical applications; and as traces in various materials to enhance their properties. Yttrium has no known biological role, but exposure to yttrium compounds can cause lung disease in humans.
