In the years since, advances in computer power and programming have reduced the costs of CGI to the point where it is less expensive than traditional model making and other animated techniques. CGI has been used extensively in the revived series, beginning with the title sequence and a zooming shot of Earth in the first episode of the modern series, Rose.

- CGI (Computer-generated imagery) are images of reality simulated on a computer. By about 2012 static images rendered on an average PC will often be indistinguishable from photos. By 2020 many people will be spending half of their lives in a virtual reality. To understand the prospects and its inevitability it helps to understand the history of CGI and its present state

We had great reservations about it, because it still didn't have the reality. The surface treatment wasn't totally believable [remark: Justman is referring to a CGI refit-Constitution-class that was commissioned for evaluation]; we could have gotten by, it would have been acceptable, but it wasn't satisfactory." - CGI is an investigation agency in Mainframe. They specialize in in depth investigations of odd happenings in the city. Two primary investigators for CGI are special agent Data Nully and special agent Fax Modem. Phong tasked CGI and it’s two top agents to investigate a rash of kidnappings on Level 31, the most recent being Al's Waiter and Dot Matrix. Data Nully and Fax Modem went to Al's Wait & Eat to ask questions about the disappearances. They ran into Bob there, who was also looking for Dot. They discussed the missing people and Agent Modem revealed that he thought a Web Creature was responsible, thinking it might be Mouse, since she has fangs. Agent Nully thought his theories were paranoid, but possibly correct. The pair were proven correct, that it was a Web Creature, but it wasn’t Mouse. They used flash lights to control the creature, since they can’t stand strong light, but it eventually escaped and formed a portal to the Web. Agent Modem also had a theory that there is no User, that it is mass psychosis produced by the Guardians to control the populace. He also believes the Game Cubes are sent by the Guardians to promote the User myth. (Trust No One)

(Star Trek: The Next Generation USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D Blueprints, booklet, p. 14; Cinefex, issue 37, p. 10) Milkis declined the prospect of adopting CGI for another reason. He commented, "It was incredibly good, and it took some real thinking on our part, but ultimately we decided that if something ever happened to that company and they couldn't deliver, then we'd have nothing. We were very concerned about that and ultimately they did go out of business." (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, p. 11)
