Audio is sampled using a 14-bit 44 kHz system using adaptive DPCM. Since CDs are double-sided, this leads to a storage capacity of one and a half hours per side in stereo or forty-five minutes per side in the more common quadrophonic format. Mono CDs are also possible but rarely manufactured. Some CD players and drives have two lasers and do not require the disc to be flipped. Cheaper models have only one, which necessitates turning over the disc manually. Single-sided portable CD players are popular and represent the state of the art of audio reproduction.
