Bonura was born in New Orleans and owned various bars and restaurants in the New Orleans area where he also resided for the most of his life. Bonura was a close associate of Anthony Carollo and his brother Nicholas Bonura. Bonura's rap sheet dated back to 1925 and included arrests for auto theft, robbery and narcotics law violations and violations of the OPA and Dyer acts. He was a major narcotics trafficker in the Texas-Louisiana area and became a member/soldier of the New Orleans crime family under crime boss Corrado Giacona.
