While growing up, he loved watching Disney films and movies with comic legends like Bob Hope and George Burns, and enjoyed listening to such radio acts as Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy. He would grow up to pay tribute to—and work with—many of these same legends. Henson graduated as a member of the National Honor Society from Northwestern Senior High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, on June 14, 1954.

- After the success of The Muppet Show and The Muppet Movie, began to develop a darker and more realistic fantasy film that did not feature the Muppets and displayed "a growing, brooding interest in mortality." With 1982's The Dark Crystal, which he co-directed with Frank Oz and also co-wrote, Henson said he was "trying to go toward a sense of realism—toward a reality of creatures that are actually alive [where] it's not so much a symbol of the thing, but you're trying to [present] the thing itself." To provide a visual style distinct from the Muppets, the puppets in The Dark Crystal were based on conceptual artwork by Brian Froud.
- In 1969 Joan Ganz Cooney & the newly-formed Children's Television Workshop approached Henson about creating & performing puppets on a new show aimed at pre-schoolers. The show would become Sesame Street, & it introduced viewers to such memorable characters as Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Count von Count, Ernie & Bert, Cookie Monster, Grover, & eventually Elmo as well.
- Around 1983, Roger Law and Peter Fluck went to a television puppetry class that Jim was teaching. One of the things that Jim pointed out that scared Roger and Peter was "to never make human puppets because it would cause disbelieve by the audience." Roger & Peter later met Jim after the class asking either if he wanted to be a part of Spitting Image or if they can rent one of his workshops. Jim wasn't interested and he said that he was busy with his fantasy projects like Labyrinth.

He was also an Oscar-nominated film director, Emmy Award-winning television producer, and the founder of The Jim Henson Company, the Jim Henson Foundation, and Jim Henson's Creature Shop. He died on May 16, 1989, of organ failure resulting from a Group A streptococcal infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes.
