It must be planted at a location by left clicking on the icon in the palantir and then left clicking on the location. It must then be lit by a either a berserker with a torch or by a fire source (e.g. Saruman's fireball or a fire arrow). It will then explode, dealing high damage to any units and buildings nearby. It can cause friendly fire, so be careful.
