Chick's first race came in the 1954 season, when he competed at LeHi. Starting positions in the field of fifty-two are unknown, but Chick fell some seventy-three laps down in the race and finished a mediocre 33rd as a result. Chick luckily had a much better 1955 season. He started it off at Palm Beach, earning his best career start (7th), completing all but eleven laps, and winding up with a career-best 9th place effort. He wasn't too bad at Jacksonville either, finishing 16th despite early mechanical woes.
