Noto Boil, not simply "Noto" nor "Boil" as he was ever quick to point out, was originally a company cutter and healer in the Host under Dujek Onearm. When Ganoes Paran took over as High Fist of the Host, Noto Boil became the Host's High Mage. He was Kartoolian by birth and had once been a priest of Soliel. He had long, wispy, colourless hair and skin the colour of tanned goat leather. He was tall, thin and stooped and had a long-standing habit of picking at his teeth with a fish spine. A habit which did nothing for his appearance.

A habit which did nothing for his appearance. Noto told Paran that he used to be a Leg-breaker in his youth, then was apprenticed to a local healer. After joining the Malazan Army (probably to escape poverty and/or the law), his first campaign was in Korel, in the Theftian Campaigns where he acquired some further tutelage from the healer Ipshank and also met Manask. He was then send to Genabackis, by now healer to a full legion.
