Michael Herring is a contemporary painter and book illustrator. He provided dramatic new cover art for the Del Rey paperback editions of the Oz books of L. Frank Baum and Ruth Plumly Thompson. Herring was a popular and prolific artist who created covers for many science fiction and fantasy titles from the 1970s though the '90s, including editions of Star Wars titles and the novels of J.R.R. Tolkien, among many other genre works. He quit the practice of cover art at the height of his career and now he and his wife are traveling the world enjoying life as it comes.
