The league began in the 1955-56 season as the renamed Central Interior Hockey League. It was intermediate level. It was an outlaw league, outside of the British Columbia Amateur Hockey Association until the 1963-64 season. Prior to that season it could not participate in the provincial playoffs The league was the major Senior A League in the Cariboo Region of British Columbia for a long time. In 1979, the league merged with other shrinking leagues to form the British Columbia Senior Hockey League. The CarHL came back for one season in 1983-84 before disappearing.
