The Southern Wastes are a desert area of Rathillien situated to the south, below the Escarpment. The Wastes contain Urakarn and the Great Salt Sea (normally dry), and are the home of the Waster Horde.

- Little is known about this area, save that it's not a great place to spend a holiday. Vast fields of magma that lie beneath the surface have baked this realm into a harsh wasteland. Ragged red mountains and deep canyons scar a region in which landship sailors claim the wind signs of life's many hardships.
- The Southern Wastes were an area on the Ubese homeworld, Uba IV. Presumably, they were wastelands formed after the planet was bombarded during the bombardment of the Uba system. Circa 3 ABY, it was home to several Ubese clans, including Clan Vorsazg, a clan led by War-Master Savax. These clans, possibly with Hutt assistance, manned a flotilla of capital ships to attack the "yrak pootczk" Ubese of Ubertica. They managed to lay waste to several Ubertican cities before being destroyed by Imperial forces.

| - Before [the Kencyrath] arrived on Rathillien, the natives say that in [the Southern Wastes'] place was a huge inland sea surrounded by rich civilizations. Then the climate changed from temperate to a desert, don't ask me why or how. They say that even the stars shifted in the sky. Anyway, the sea was cut off from its freshwater sources, turned to salt, and dried up. The cities that clustered around it disappeared into the sand and their people fled. Only their outposts remained—Kothifir, Hurlen, and Urakarn, for example. All of this was some three thousand years ago, during the Fifth Age.
