At any rate, I think it makes sense to have some simple tips and I wouldn't want to expand this to an impenetrable maze. I think the simalt stuff was intended as a kind of IRC FAQ (not sure why it's not in Vim IRC FAQ). Feel free to delete it or move it to the FAQ according to taste, because I agree it is out of place, but a simple list (perhaps up to four times this size, but no more) of stuff-you-never-knew-about is good for newcomers. However, I see no reason not to also put this list into a "Random tips" category along with other similar rapid-fire no-real-theme lists of random mappings and settings. I don't think "random tips" would be a good title, but I can't think of a better at the moment. Best Vim Tips, Short mappings for common tasks, and others would fit in quite well in such a category, whereas other categories always seem like a stretch (even seems like a bad fit). --Fritzophrenic 14:28, 29 July 2009 (UTC) I believe that tips should be better aimed than this list. The aim of this particular list is to provide a starting point for a new user to begin delving into the details of our hugely complex editor, with links to tips across the wiki that will be of immediate use, but do not themselves qualify as "getting started" tips. Without such guidance, the plethora of commands and options in Vim is easily overwhelming to a new user, and having thousands of tips of various complexity is not all that much more useful without good suggestions of where to start, pointing to tips accessible to a beginner. --Fritzophrenic 15:50, 29 July 2009 (UTC) With that aim in mind, I agree. I saw it as a rather haphazard collection of random tips at first, which I consider not being very helpful, but with the addition of links to other tips delving deeper into specific subjects, and with the addition of more "things you might not know", it's starting to look better.
