Paul Loughran (born 7th July 1969 in Belfast) played Butch Dingle in Emmerdale from 1994 until the character's death in a bus crash in 2000. Paul went to have a regular role in the ITV crime drama Blue Murder, alongside former Emmerdale co-star Ian Kelsey. Paul has also appeared in other British TV shows such as Heartbeat, Ideal, The Royal, The Bill and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. Educated at Methodist College in Belfast, he is best known for the role of Butch Dingle in Emmerdale. ITV viewers also saw him in Blue Murder from 2003 to 2009 playing DS Butchers. For seven years after this, he went back to university and trained to be a primary school teacher, an occupation he worked at in Blackburn until 2016 when he appeared in the television drama Jericho. During the 1980s when the real voice of Gerry Adams, the spokesman for Sinn Féin, was forbidden to be broadcast in Britain, Loughran's voice was dubbed into recordings of him broadcast on British airwaves. His other credits include minor roles in The Darling Buds of May; High Boot Benny; Auf Wiedersehen, Pet; The Hothouse; I Fought the Law; The Royal; Ideal; The Baby War; Mobile; The Bill; Heartbeat and Doctors. He is married with four children.
