Gul is a military rank in the Cardassian Guard, held by vessel or station commanders. Its closest equivalent in the Federation Starfleet is that of captain, but a gul may have additional responsibilities such as commanding an Order or governing over an occupied territory. This rank is superior to dal but subordinate to jagul. A ship’s gul will usually take a cut of the profits from the cargo they are transporting. They are also expected to entertain guests aboard their ships.

  • In the Cardassian language, gul is an Cardassian officer rank title which, in translation to Federation Standard, is approximately equivalent to a ship's captain of comparable military or naval service organizations, such as Starfleet. The title of gul was in use in the 24th century by the Cardassian Guard agency of the Cardassian Central Command. (TNG episode: "The Wounded"; TLE - Terok Nor novel: Day of the Vipers)

  • Guls may have had additional responsibilities, such as leading an Order, or acting as governor of an occupied territory. (DS9: "The Maquis, Part I") Dukat retained the title of Gul after Cardassia joined the Dominion, to reflect his hands-on approach to his new role as leader of his people. (DS9: "Ties of Blood and Water") When assigned as a freighter captain, a ship's gul routinely took a cut of the profits from the cargo that was being transported. These guls were also often expected to entertain guests aboard their ships. (DS9: "Return to Grace")
