Coggs Stickle was a young hedgehog who lived in Mossflower with his family: his father Ben, his mother Goody, and three siblings, Ferdy, Spike, and Posy Stickle. Along with his twin brother, Ferdy, Coggs was captured by Tsarmina's troops to be held as ransom for the woodlanders. In the dungeons of Kotir the brothers befriended the wildcat Gingivere, and the three of them were eventually rescued by the otter Mask, who was sent by the Corim. They were also close friends with Mask and were only told that he went to a place far away when he died.

Ferdy and Coggs were well-known for being mischievous, and idolizing Gonff the Mousethief and Martin the Warrior. They both also thought they would make excellent soldiers, and were often given "missions" by Lady Amber and Skipper. These "missions" often were as simple as guarding Brockhall. Later they became the first Cellarhogs of Redwall Abbey. During the construction of Redwall Abbey, Ferdy and Coggs provided one of the most important features of the Abbey by smithing the famous weather vane where the Sword of Martin would eventually be placed.
