  • Book the First--Recalled to Life I The Period It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way--in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.
Biegnie, by wyciągnąć przypalone babeczki z pieca. Dotyka gorącej tacy i rozsypuje wszystko na podłogę. Kiedy trwa spotkanie klubu książkowego, w którym bierze udział, zaczyna się trząść ziemia. Razem z innymi czytelnikami wychodzi z domu. „Henry” rozkazuje Goodwin’owi pobiec do ogona samolotu i udawać rozbitka.
  • The opening line of the novel was "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan; DS9: "Extreme Measures") Spock gave his friend James T. Kirk an antique hardbound copy of the novel for the latter's 52nd birthday on March 22, 2285. Although Spock claimed that there was no implicit message in the gift, Kirk took special meaning from the final words of the book: "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known." (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)
