The NU-B34 autonomous digger was a thickly armored, tracked fifth-degree droid used by the Corporate Alliance, the Commerce Guild, and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The NU-B34 was manufactured by subsidaries and allies under the Corporate Alliance, and the miners of the Commerce Guild also used it extensively. Following the execution of the Separatist Council by Darth Sidious's new apprentice, Darth Vader, these units were de-activated. However, the basic concept was adopted by other miners after the war.

  • The NU-B34 autonomous digger was a thickly armored, tracked fifth-degree droid used by the Corporate Alliance, the Commerce Guild, and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The NU-B34 was manufactured by subsidaries and allies under the Corporate Alliance, and the miners of the Commerce Guild also used it extensively. It was designed as a mining machine, to dig through even the toughest rocks with three laser cutters so the valuables within could be collected. Much of its body was thickly armored on the top, yet held together by flexible shock absorber beams. This allowed it to fare well against falling rock. By flattening the top armor plate and compacting the center spring assembly, it could reduce its height by about 70 centimeters. This was useful for eliminating the need to raise cave ceilings, which could be risky. Soon after the dawn of the Clone Wars, the CIS discovered that it also made it an excellent siege weapon. Its cutting lasers could quickly bore through the thickest durasteel walls, and its armor was nearly impervious to personal blasters, and even effective against vehicle-mounted cannons. Retractable laser cannons were attached under the top armor plate, and the borders of the laser plate were fitted with electrified panels to weaken shields. However, it was still very slow and had its share of weaknesses, so it was almost always deployed by an escort. Battle droid footsoldiers would often ride on the side treads. Some of its weaknesses were from its method of locomotion. While the tracks were tough, stable, and suitable for many environments, they had difficulty on less stable or strong surfaces such as ice and loose soil. They also moved the droid very slowly, and the laser cutters had a very short range. It was also vulnerable to flamethrower attacks, as the armor was not very heat-resitant, and internal circuitry would be fried. Following the execution of the Separatist Council by Darth Sidious's new apprentice, Darth Vader, these units were de-activated. However, the basic concept was adopted by other miners after the war.
