It acts in a number of ways including blocking uptake of adrenergics and dopamine, stimulating the release of monoamines such as dopamine and norepinephrine, and inhibiting monoamine oxidase. Amphetamine has been used to treat ADHD, obesity, narcolepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, and depression. It has been used illegally as a recreational drug and as a performance enhancer. Amphetamine is a phenethylamine. It is one of the simplest phenethylamines, differing from phenethylamine only by the addition of a methyl group to the alpha position. Amphetamine should not be confused with methamphetamine which is a similar but much more potent drug.
