The Porirua Library is one of the educational and recreational arms of the Porirua City Council. Membership is free to any resident of Porirua City. Headquartered at the corner of Norrie Street and Parumoana Street, in a building that was erected in the 1970s for a commercial business but that has since been much enlarged to include all of Pataka, the Porirua Library has suburban branches at Cannons Creek, Plimmerton, Pukerua Bay, Titahi Bay, and Whitby. The Plimmerton branch in School Road used to be the smallest public library branch in the country, but was moved to the Plimmerton Pavilion from 3 October 2007; when all the shelves are folded away not in use, it's about the same size as the old building and less obvious.

The Central Library has a full range of material, including one of the country's best sections.
