Tintagel was the place where Arthur Pendragon was conceived and born.
Tintagel Castle is where Gorlois Duke of Cornwall puts his wife Igraine while he's at war. It is there that Merlin magically disguised Uther Pendragon as Gorlois so that Uther could enter Tintagel and sleep with Igraine, who thought him her husband. Thus Uther fathered King Arthur on her. Tintagel is the location of these events in many works, notably from Historia Regum Britanniae, and Idylls of the King to the The Mists of Avalon. It is the inspiration for a symphonic piece by Arnold Bax.
