With the aid of the nobility, Albert succeeded in ridding Austria of the problems which had arisen during his minority. He assisted the Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg in his campaigns against the Bohemian Hussites. In 1422 he married Sigismund's daughter and heiress Elizabeth. Through Elizabeth, Albert succeeded Sigismund in Germany, Bohemia and Hungary in 1438. Albert managed to gain Hungary, but the Bohemians refused to recognised and gained allies in the Poles. Albert was campaigning against them when he was elected the King of Germany, a title which he does not seem to have wanted. Following the campaign in Bohemia, Albert was then involved in Hungary defending it against the Turks. He died there in the castle Langendorf on 27 October 1439 and was buried in Stuhlweissenburg.
