Herbert George Wells, known by the pen name H.G. Wells, is one of the nineteenth century literary figures who is sometimes dubbed "the father of science fiction", although Jules Verne has a very reasonable claim to the title also. Wells certainly popularized the genre in English, and wrote the first widely read stories of parallel worlds and time travel at least.
