The Massey Ferguson 500 Series was introduced in the 1976 to complement the Massey Ferguson 100 series. The range was replaced in the mid 1980s by the Massey Ferguson 600 series. The range was updated from the 100 series style tinwork and with a superior safety cabs for the revised UK safety standards imposed by EU regulations. The distinctive feature was the silver nose surround and black grill with integral lights carried over from the 100 & 200 series models. One notable feature was the tractor only had a door on the nearside, that was integral with the side window, creating good visibility and access.
