  • Hitchhiking is one way to get around the earth. It is recommended to find other means of transportation first if at all possible. Hitchhiking could be dangerous and/or illegal in many parts of Earth.
  • Hitchhiking is when someone stands on the side of a road and points their thumb in the direction they are traveling, in the hopes that someone in an automobile passing in that direction will pick them up and give them a ride to wherever it is they are going. The activity is usually looked at in a negative light, due to the fact that people that pick up hitchhikers are strangers, and they could be dangerous people. Robin referred to the incident in which mushroom spores from Krypton took a ride on a Kryptonite meteor as "Operation Hitchhiker."
  • The Op-Yop was a toy marketed in the 1960's by a company based in Royal Oak, Michigan called Kramer Designs. The company's original location was an office on Adams in the neighboring community of Birmingham. The history we could find was based on a Time Magazine article in 1968 where it was stated that a million of the Op-Yops had been sold and another million were expected to sell by Christmas. In my travels, I have found some additional information including an internal memo relating to some six months worth of advertising that was done on the Soupy Sales Show with Soupy doing the commercials shot in Detroit. There were also memo's to retailers advising them to stock up on the toy to be in sync with the Soupy Sales ads. I tracked down the original molder who made the parts and talked to
  • In some places you can hitchhike with your bike. Beware, in many countries a lot of travel is by shared "Grande Taxis" (the french term as used in Africa). These travel more or less fixed routes. You may think you're hitch-hiking but you're not. You've flagged down someone who picks people up for a living, and there is a fixed fare for whatever journey it is you're doing. The fare is shared amongst the people on board. So the poor will wait for the vehicle to fill. You and I probably prefer not to wait, and prefer a vehicle that is not tightly packed.
  • In 2151, Charles Tucker III described a cloaked Xyrillian starship which was hiding within Enterprise's warp field as a hitchhiker. (ENT: "Unexpected") In 2152, Tucker responded to the theory that a mysterious pod they had picked up was of Human origin but had got a ride from someone, that that would have constituted a hitchhiking record. (ENT: "Future Tense") In the 2240s in an alternate reality, Johnny was hitchhiking along an Iowa road when a young James T. Kirk sped past him in a car. (Star Trek)

I tracked down the original molder who made the parts and talked to some home workers who assembled them at their homes from 1967 through 1968. The toy was labeled as a psychedelic sensation and was skin packaged on 4-1/4 inch by 14 inch printed chipboard. More can be found out about the recent reincarnation of the op-yop at WWW.op-yop.com

(Star Trek) In 2373, Odo stopped the limousine of Julian Bashir within the Julian Bashir, Secret Agent holoprogram to talk about Arissa. While stopped, Miles O'Brien (as Falcon) pointed a gun to Bashir's head through an open window and asked whether nobody had told Bashir not to stop for hitchhikers. (DS9: "A Simple Investigation") In 2375, after One had been created aboard the USS Voyager and began assimilating information, B'Elanna Torres sarcastically asked how many Borg hitchhikers they'd pick up on their journey. However, anywhere that has a lot of pick-ups it's worth trying. If you're sharing with many others it will be cheap. Ecuador is supposed to be good.
