| - Taro Tsubasa (翼 太郎, tsubasa tarou) is a middle schooler who is the captain of the Nankatsu team. He is the titular Captain Tsubasa of the one-shot Captain Tsubasa published in 1980, the pilot of the regular Captain Tsubasa series and the origin of the whole Captain Tsubasa franchise. He only appears in this story and is the prototype of Tsubasa Ozora and Taro Misaki, although he shares few characteristics with those characters in skills and personality. Thanks to the efforts of their captain, Nankatsu is on the verge of qualifying to the national tournament. After a match, Genzo Wakabayashi, a childhood friend, appears challenging him to qualify to the finals. Taro, contrary to Genzo, was not as skillful, so he didn't consider himself a rival of Genzo. Nankatsu and Taro manage to reach the finals. Before the final match, Taro catches a glimpse of Genzo confessing his love to Aki Yamazaki, Taro and Genzo childhood friend who is the manager of Nankatsu. Genzo says that he would only give up on her if Taro defeated him. Taro injures himself during the match, but does not accept to be changed. Aki tries to convince him to stay away because of his injury. Taro refuses and reveals his true feelings about Genzo, being fed up of always losing to Genzo, and he will not give up if that means losing Aki. Aki inadvertently reveals to Taro that she only loves him. Even so, he re-enters the game to take the final free kick outside the penalty area. Ryo Ishizaki wants to stop him from shooting since he is injured, but Taro commands him with vigor to move away. Genzo, seeing Taro's determination and confident in his abilities that have allowed him to remain scoreless from shoots outside the penalty area, moves his barrier away. Despite shooting with his injured leg and Genzo's efforts, Taro scores, making Nankatsu the national tournament winners.
